Mulmur Montessori Outdoor Centre was established in 1998 as one of Ontario’s first Montessori outdoor education centres.

Maria Montessori believed that the key to fostering a child’s love for culture is gained through experience. By exploring beyond the walls of the school the child sets out on a journey of discovery that leads to new found frreedom of thought and a world full of opportunity.

At Mulmur Montessori Outdoor Centre we recognize and encourage the need for children to gain confidence and self-esteem through outdoor educational activities. Our aim is to promote learning about the environment in a supportive atmosphere while focusing on activities which are indigenous to the area. We give the children the tools they need to make a difference in the world, emphasizing the value of cooperation, diversity and our place within the environment.

Our Director and Staff

Heather MacEachern is the founder and director of Mulmur Montessori Outdoor Centre. She has been a Montessori teacher since 1996. The idea of MMOC came from her passion and love of the natural beauty of the Mulmur Hills. As a Montessori teacher, Heather felt compelled to share the wonders of the area by offering an outdoor experience to children. She hopes that the children who visit MMOC will leave with a greater respect and appreciation for the environment and the world we live on.

Alex, A.K.A “Rabbit” has been a part of Mulmur Montessori Outdoor Centre’s team for the past 4 years. Currently she is a group leader for Big Sisters in Guelph and, has been a mentor for girls 9-11 for 2 years. As a Montessori educated student, Alex fully incorporates the Montessori philosophy into her interactions with the children who come to MMOC. She feels passionate about the programs that we offer to the students and staff, which in turn reflects in our program.

Rosa, A.K.A "Hemlock" has worked with children in an outdoor setting for ten years. She brings numerous skills and unlimited enthusiasm to the MMOC team. From searching out wild edibles to finding hidden salamanders, Rosa's knowledge and love of nature are clear. Children are drawn to Rosa's positive energy and are inspired by the creative and fun learning environment she provides. Her ability to challenge each child and to help them develop their skills and confidence is exceptional.

Josh, AKA "Otter" is happily returning to Mulmur. While persuing his degree in zoology and psychology at U of T, Josh managed canoe trip programs for various camps during the summers. He was able to continue working in the outdoors with Mulmur Montessori Outdoor Centre in its early years. Some time has passed since Josh's last MMOC program due to travel, working as a paramedic in Toronto and developing first aid training programs. He is enthusiastically returning to his passion of working with children in the outdoors.
